The clear space between the femur and the tibia is due to the fact thatthe interarticular cartilage does not produce a shadow on the X-ray plate, which can be distinguished from that of the surrounding soft parts. The shadow of the patella can be plainly seen, and shows that bonelying over the lower extremity of the femur with only a very small partof its lower end extending over the interarticular space. The spine of the tibia, the epiphyseal line running horizontally acrossits upper end, and the head of the styloid process of the fibula, are allvisible.
