The proprietor would not allow lurn to print an article denouncing a political ring, whereuponyoung Grady bought two other papers of the town, combined them, and carried on his campaign. Aftersome experience on the New York Herald he served as reporter on the Atlanta Constitution. In 1880 he pur-chased a fourth interest in the paper and became the managing editor. He was soon recognized as a moving spiritin the progress of his city and the whole South. The reputation he gained as a speaker and editor secured him theinvitation from the New England Society of New York to respond to the toast, TheSouth, at its
