"Freighter 'Ohioan', converted into transport for troops, sails for France on February 4, 1919. Previously used for cargo, the space between decks is now outfitted as quarters for soldiers returning home. The conversion of the vessel, docked at Pier 9 in Hoboken, , took approximately two months. Hatch No. 5 now accommodates 468 berths made of iron piping in tiers of 4, which can fold up and be angled to prevent occupant displacement in rough seas. Wire springs are provided for added comfort. Released by the Censor on February 19, 1919."
