At center among the buildings in the skyline is the Akureyrarkirkja church. Akureyri is the main community in Northern Iceland and is often referred to as the capital of North Iceland. It is one of the nation's five largest communities. It is also a tourist haven especially during summer months as a base for the region and activities such as whale watching via boats in its harbor and in the winter for skiing. The town also has its own airport.
