Part of the NRHP site "Senior Officers Quarters Historic District, Yerba Buena Island" listed since February 26, 2008, at Whiting Way at Northgate Rd., North shore of Yerba Buena Island, coordinates 37°48′47″N 122°21′51″W, Yerba Buena Island. Includes Quarters 1-7 and associated garages (Buildings 83, 205, and 230). From HABS metadata at Library of Congress Survey number HABS CA-1793-I Building/structure dates: 1918 initial construction Significance: Building 83 is significant as part of the Senior Officers' Quarters District. Although short-lived as a training station (1898-1923), Yerba Buena Island was essential in the establishment of a modern American naval presence on the West Coast. 1 of 4 such facilities, Yerba Buena Island quickly became a key naval training station while it operated, and continued to play an important role in the military presence on the island after being decommissioned in 1923 when it served as a receiving ship until WWII, and a housing complex for Naval Station Treasure Island. The Senior Officers' Quarters District represents the major nexus of historic building stock on the island and is significant for its association with the establishment of the Navy training station. The district is also significant as a representative example of residential military architecture.
