Conjunctival oedema in the eye of a 89 year old male patient. The white of the eye is bloodshot, and the lower eyelid is slightly distorted due to fluid build-up under the conjunctiva. The conjunctiva is the membrane that lines the inside of the eyelids and covers the white of the eye. This condition is often caused by allergies, infections, or physical trauma. Common treatments for this condition include antihistamines, anti-inflammatories, eye drops and eye ointments.
