An old engraving of Taylor’s machine gun. It is from a Victorian mechanical engineering book of the 1880s. This rapid-firing artillery weapon rotated like a Gatling gun. Cartridges were contained within ‘charging blocks’, one of which is shown on a shelf (centre). Once loaded automatically from a magazine, the block was inserted in the gun. When all cartridge rounds had been fired, the empty shell cases remained in the block could be withdrawn with it. George Taylor owned the Durham Iron Mill and Furnace located in Durham Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA.
