This excess of pollen is necessary because of the loss of so many grains which arelodged about the stalk and which fall tothe ground. If every grain were to reacha silk there would be 30,250 grains foreach ovary, if each stalk produced butone ear, or 15,125 in case of two ears, counting 1,000 ovaries per ear. FEMALE OR PISTILLATE FLOW-ERS. The female flowers are borne on ahardened spike (cob), which is producedon a branch or shank coming from a nodeon the main stem. At first, the leaf sheathcovers and protects this outgrowth, butit soon appears above the sheath and thecorn is said to be shooting. In a shorttime, the husks, which are modified leaves, open at the tip end and silks appear. Theouter end of each silk, a portion of thestigma, is often split, and is covered withvery short hanrs which, together with asticky or mucilaginous secretion present, aids in collecting pollen grains.
