There is a tradition preserved in thefamily, that William Davenport, of Chorley, in the reign of Queen Elizabeth, beingbenighted «a he was travelling over the adjoining forest of Morfe, was hospitably receivedand entertained by Francis Bromley, Esq. of Hallon, adjoining Davenport House, anancient mansion, of which there are some traces still remaining. In consequence of thishospitality an intimacy ensued, the result of which was that Mr. Davenport married Jane,his daughter, and eventually his heir, by which marriage the ample property of theBromleys, at Hallon, came into the Davenport family, in which it has since continued,William Yelverton, Esq., the present possessor, being the fifth in lineal descent from theabove-named ancestor, William Dav
