English village, Bolton-by Bowland, Lancashire, England showing a stone monument and wooden stocks
Some 5 miles north-east of Clitheroe, Bolton-by-Bowland nestles between the hills in the Ribble Valley. It is one of the most beautiful areas of Lancashire. In 1464 Henry VI sought shelter here with Ralph Pudsey at Bolton Hall after his defeat by the Yorkists at the battle of Hexham during the ‘War of the Roses’.
