King, Jr.,who, from public-spirited motives, agreed to build theArch for cost, waiving his usual commission of ten percent.; Mr. King gave the contract for the marble toJames Sinclair & Co., and for setting it to DavidAngus ; the brick filling of the Arch was done by em-ployees of Mr. King. The fund reached $90,000 on the 10th of Feb-ruary, 1891; on the 14th, at the sale of pictures ofGeorge I. Seney, the proceeds of two of them, $1,550,were given to the fund, this being the largest indi-vidual subscription to date. The piers of the Arch,which were then about ten feet high, were decoratedwith flags at half-mast for the funeral procession ofGeneral Sherman, which passed the site in growth of the Arch fund was impeded at thistime by the raising of a fund of $50,000 for a
