A close up of a newborn males umbilical cord with clamps in place just after the cord had been cut.

A closeup of the clamps placed on a childs umbilical cord moments after it has been cut. This stops blood loss from the baby through the umbilical cord. The umbilical cord connects the embryo or foetus with the placenta of the mother to allow for the transmission of nourishment from the mother to the unborn child. When the child is born the umbilical cord is then cut and clamped. After a few days the umbilical cord attached to the baby falls off and the belly button is all that remains of the lifeline between mother and baby. There is room for text.
