Lanzarote. ERS-1 radar image of Lanzarote, one of the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. This image shows much evidence of Lanzarote's volcanic past. Numerous volcanic craters and cones are seen. The light surface in the lower left of the island is relatively young lava. It appears brighter to the radar as its surface is rougher than the rest of the island; the older lava flows have been more eroded. The holiday resort of Arrecife is the bright patch about half-way up the east (right) coast. The islands at the top of the frame are Graciosa (larger) and Punto Gorda. The data for this image were gathered by the European ERS-1 radar mapping satellite.
