China: Entrance to the ruins at Yarkhoto or Jiaohe Gucheng (Jiaohe Ancient City), near Turpan, Xinjiang. Yarkhoto (Jiaohe Ruins) is found in the Yarnaz Valley, 10 km west of the city of Turpan. Yarkhoto was developed as an administrative centre and garrison town by the Chinese following the Han conquest of the area in the 2nd century BCE. The city flourished under the Tang Dynasty (618-907), but subsequently went into decline, and was finally abandoned early in the 14th century.
