On 22 June 1943, Nazi soldiers massacred the inhabitants of the Jewish Belarussian village of Khatyn, murdering 149 civilian men, women, and children by burning them alive in a barn. There was a sole survivor. The Khatyn Memorial is a memorial not only to this massacre, but to all the 628 Jewish Belarussian villages whose inhabitants were similarly murdered. 186 of these villages were never rebuilt and are memorialized here in Khatyn, near Minsk, Belarus. An eternal flame burns in the Square of Memory.
