Some of the West Wittering's 156 beach huts - many painted in shades of blue, green, ochre and pink in a private beach estate, West Sussex, England,UK
Demand is high for West Wittering's 156 weather-beaten huts - many painted in shades of blue, green, ochre and pink - which sit on a private estate running, unusually, right down to the water's edge. Would-be buyers pay £20 a year to remain on a waiting list, and when a hut becomes available they are invited to submit a sealed bid. Peter Morton, West Wittering Estate plc's managing director, said most bids were between £25,000 and £40, Stone Keith Richards has spent £60,000 on a beach hut that looks more like a suburban garden shed than a multi-millionaire's hang-out. The modest property on the seafront of the genteel West Sussex resort of West Wittering will offer an escape from rock-star living. Loud music is banned, and there's no electricity or running water. West Wittering, Sussex As well as being voted Britain’s best family beach last year (by the folk at Country Life magazine), West Wittering is also, somewhat incongruously, home to the world’s most rock-and-roll beach hut, belonging to Keith Richards whose home is in the village adjoining this mile of golden sands. This beach is popular with windsurfers and is capable of drawing up to 15,000 visitors on a summer’s Sunday.
