Mr. Smithkons finds that more than half of the boxes are occupied each season;and he counts the birds of inestimable advantage in helping to save the grapesand apples from the ravages of worms. In two instances Robins accepted thepartial shelter afforded by the boxes and nested in the crotch of the tree imme-diately under the Bluebirds. The eggs, from four to six in number, are a uniform pale blue, with a surface somewhatpolished. Owing tothe delicacy of thepigment, cabinetspecimens fade read-ily. Pure white setsare on record, andfaded blues are notunusual. Two orthree broods areraised in a season. Doubtless Blue-birds song owessomewhat of thehigh estimation inwhich it is held tothe fact that itsounds forth at atime when there arefew rivals, and theaspect of nature con-trasts somewhatsternly with its goodcheer.
