MRI scanning. Staff nurse monitoring a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner. MRI is a diagnostic technique that produces cross-sectional images of parts of the body, as seen on the monitor (centre, left). The scanner uses a strong magnetic field to produce radio emissions from hydrogen atoms in the body. This produces an image, which is particularly useful for studying soft tissue. This is Siemens MAGNETOM Espree MRI scanner, which was first introduced in 2004. The MAGNETOM Espree was designed with obese or claustrophobic patients in mind, having a wide bore (opening) of 70, rather than 60, centimetres.
