It is recorded, however, that at the beginningof the century, one of the Cardinals shoes was still to beseen in the Palace ; but as the upper leather had beenrenewed at one time, and the sole at another, its claim toreverence was of a somewhat impalpable kind. Many relics, reputed to belong to historic persons, can scarcely boast evensuch a shadowy claim to genuineness as that. We may mention here that the Pavilions, after the deathof the Duchess of Gloucester in 1807, were given to theDuke of Kent, father of the Queen ; and he occasionallyresided here till his own death in 1820. ^ RobertsiT/^;;?^?/;^ of Hannah More^ vol. i., p.
