Etienne Emile Baulieu. Portrait of French physiologist Professor Etienne Emile Baulieu (born 1926). Baulieu discovered DHEA (dehydroepiandrost- erone), a hormone produced by the human adrenal glands. DHEA levels have been found to decline with age in humans, and Baulieu suggested that DHEA has a role in the aging process. Research has confirmed DHEA may have a role counteracting aging in the elderly. Baulieu also developed RU486, the anti-abortion pill. He is the recipient of many research prizes including the Lasker Award. Baulieu works at the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research. Photographed in 1995.
