Peterborough election riot, 1906: photograph of the remains of the cab used to transport George Greenwood, the Liberal Party candidate, during the election campaign. The carriage was seized outside the Grand Hotel, set on fire & then pulled through the city streets by the arsonists. Greenwood won the election, defeating the Liberal Unionist candidate Robert Purvis. 10 men, Samuel Eldred, Leonard Bothamley, Charles Henry Hogg, William Pickering, Arthur Flintoft, William Hobbs, Ernest Merchant, Thomas Wilcox, William Doubleday & James Thorold (mostly farm labourers) were acquitted of the offence
