The pruning ofyoung trees can be done more readily with apair of shears than with a knife, and in usinga knife the operator is likely to cut branchesthat are not intended to be removed. If thetrees are pruned annually, shears will be theonly pruning tool necessary for the first 3years. After this it is a good plan to makeuse of a hand pruning hook for cutting backthe leading branches. A desirable form ofFraio hook shown in Fig. 10. For peach. §11 PEACH CULTURE 27 trees it is desirable to procure a pruner with an 8-foot or a 10-foot handle. In the case of 4- and 5-ycar-old trees that havebeen headed low a 6-foot primer would be more convenientthan one of 8 or 10 feet in length but it would be too shortfor older trees. When peach trees come into bearing, a pruning saw will benecessary for the removing of superfluous or injured of the best forms of saws to use for this purpose is thesingle-edged saw. Double-edged pruning saws are not gener-ally popular, as the upper edge is likely to scratch or cut thebark of parts of the tree that should not be injured. SPRAYING OF PEACH TREES 34. The spraying of the trees is a detail of peach-orchardmanagement that is of extreme importance. The sprays touse and the time for applying them depend, of course, on thekind of pests to be combated and, to some extent, on the varietyof peach to be sprayed. Following is given an outline for thespraying of peach trees
