The old well, built of cut stone, and laidup at a time when work was done honestly, stands about 30 feet from the front of thehouse. The old well-house is shown in Fig. as altered; with all fences removed. Theeffect of this was to increase the apparentsize and extent of the grounds. The darkershade on plan represents the part devotedto lawn and ornamental planting, and thelighter shade the fruit and vegetable gar-den. The fruit garden lying next thelawn. Tlie fence on the leftdivides the lawn and garden from the pas-ture ; this fence, being a light one, doesnot obstruct the view, so that the lawn, apparently uniting with pasture and haylands, gives great extent of view. Thesurplus of the garden is easily fed out tothe cattle in adjoining pasture.
