A Kubasaki High School Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps cadet models the uniform worn by the Marines who fought in the Spanish-American war during a Marine Corps birthday uniform pageant Nov. 8 aboard Camp Foster, Okinawa, Japan. During the war, Marines across the board displayed the courage, innovation and initiative that are engraved in Marines heads to this day. This was exemplified by Sgt. John Quick, who earned a medal of honor as he repeatedly exposed himself to enemy fire while signaling American ships at sea to shift their supporting fire.
