Unfinished leather puppet for wayang kulit theatre seen in the Classic Wayang crafts shop in Yogyakarta, Central Java, Indonesia. Traditional puppet shadow theatre known as wayang kulit is widespread on the islands of Java and Bali in Indonesia. Puppets for wayang kulit are made of buffalo leather. Production of one puppet takes approximately six days. Each character has its own features and can be easily identified by spectators. Tolls used for hewing puppets of buffalo leather are made from motorcycle spokes. Earlier instruments were of bamboo or bones and broke down often.
