Old railcar or railbus, now preserved.
This was one of six vehicles built in 1937 for operation by the New South Wales Department of Railways on rural lines. However, they did not prove popular with passengers due to noise and a very rough ride, and most soon changed purpose to "Pay Bus", carrying pay for rail workers on site in remote locations. The bodywork, with Art Deco influences, was by local company Waddington of Camperdown, Sydney. It was powered by a Ford V8 petrol engine, and used a 4-speed truck gearbox. This example, FP1, was preserved during 2008-09 as a project by apprentices at RailCorp, the current government passenger rail operator in the state. It is seen here on display at Central Station, Sydney.
