They grow inthe same little clusters and appear longbefore the leaves have started. Thecolor is pale pink or yellow, and theyare not very conspicuous. The prin-cipal difTerence in structure from theflowers of the red maple is the absenceof petals. RED MAPLE. This tree begins toshow its red color about the first ofApril and was in full blossom thisyear upon April 6th. The flowers comeout long before the leaves appear and. Red Maple their bright red color makes it possible to dis-tinguish these trees from a considerable examining a tree close at hand the twigsare found to be covered with small clusters ofbright-colored structures which at first appear tobe flowers, but on closer examination are foundto be separate masses of very small flowers calledumbels. There are from one to eight of theseumbels in a cluster, each one surroimded by anumber of bright red scales. There are aboutfive very small flowers in each umbel and theentire flower is red when it first opens, but theanthers soon burst open and expose the yellowpollen. ELM. This is another tree that blossoms earlyin the spring and long before the leaves have begunto appear. The first sign of the blossoming ofthis tree that came to my notice was that thelittle brown scales that cover the buds were fall-ing to the ground. I then watched the blossomsas they opened and found them in full bloom upon the fifth of April. The trees arethick
