Sumatran orang-utang mother and baby (Pongo abelii). This is the rarer of the two species of orang-utangs, found on the Indonesian island of Sumatra. Orang-utans are solitary animals and it is usually only mothers and offspring that form any long-term bond. A single baby is born after an eight-month gestation, and stays with its mother for about four years. Orang-utans reach maturity after about ten years, and can live to thirty years old.
