Lavoisier's apparatus for decomposing steam. Contemporary drawing of the experiment by Antoine Lavoisier (1743-94) to decompose steam using iron. Steam was produced in the vessel (A) and was passed through a heated gun barrel (EF) in a furnace. Excess steam was condensed at left. The gas coming out of the tube at far left was 'inflammable air', known today as hydrogen. This experiment was performed in 1783/4.
