Ovarian follicle tissue. Light micrograph of a section through tissue from an ovarian follicle, showing a boundary between two layers. The ovary is the reproductive structure that produces the female sex cells (ova). This is a pre-ovulatory follicle, four days before ovulation and a late stage in follicular development, a process called folliculogenesis. This parallels the development of the female sex cells, resulting in ovulation and the release of an ovum from the mature follicle. At left are theca interna cells; at right are granulosa (follicular) cells. Magnification: x715 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
