Rembrandts portraits of old women generally show his powers attheir greatest, and the fine example in the Hermitage, known asRembrandts Mother, fully bears out this assertion. I am at a loss tounderstand why the signature and the date 1643 upon it shouldhave been called in question. Both seem to me obviously am inclined, however, to reject the title.
