Eutrophication. True-colour satellite image of discolouration of the Sea of Azov (grey-brown, centre), Ukraine, due to eutrophication. North is at top. Water is blue, vegetation is green, clouds are white. The Sea of Azov, connected to the Black Sea (lower left), is mostly freshwater. The River Dnieper is at upper left. Eutrophication is the excessive influx of agricultural fertilisers that causes algal blooms (excessive algal growth) that can devastate lake and river ecosystems. Silt and sediment deposits are also problems in the Sea of Azov. Image taken on 21 March 2002 by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA's Terra satellite.
