In 70 the men of Kokorai descended uponLiao Tung, and ha\ing now a taste for border war and conquest,they marched into the petty kingdom of Wei, which lay in what isnow the extreme northeast of Corea. Absorbing tliis little coun-try, they kept up constant warfare against the Chinese. This career of conquest suffered a check for a time, when aChinese expedition, sailing up the Yalu River, invested the capitalcity of the king and defeated his army. The king fled beyondthe Tumen River. Eight thousand people are said to have beenmade prisoners or slaughtered by the Chinese. For a time itseemed as though Kokorai were too badly crippled to move again. Anarchy broke out in China, on the faU of the house of Han, 220, and lasted for half a century.
