False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a human lymphocyte cell undergoing a mitotic cell division (ie where 2 daughter cells with equal & identical chromosomes are produced). The cell is in late telophase stage; the nuclear envelopes of the daughter cells are about to reform (nuclear material - chromatin, is coloured pink). The 2 newly-formed cells are still joined by a narrow cytoplasmic bridge containing elements of the mitotic spindle. The spindle is formed during prophase (early stage of mitosis) by migration of 2 pairs of centrioles to opposite poles of cell, which remain joined by microtubules. Mag: x3800 at 6x6cm, x1900 at 35mm.
