Rorkes Drift Museum Kwa Zulu Natal closely resembles the original hospital building but which had a thatched roof. The original building was destroyed.
The original building was owned by Jim Rorke who died in the mid-1870s. Otto de Witt, a Swedish missionary, acquired the property and it became his house and the Swedish mission. It was used as a field hospital and destroyed in the battle on January 22 1879. A drift is the name for a bend in the (Buffalow) river where it was situated.
