The competition is divided into two vehicle classes: Prototype, UrbanConcept and then divided into three energy categories: internal combustion, battery-electric, and hydrogen fuel cell. Prototype vehicles are are futuristic, streamlined vehicles with three or four wheels, where the primary design consideration is to reduce friction and maximise energy efficiency. This year 100 Prototype vehicles are competing. UrbanConcept vehicles These are more conventional concept vehicles with four wheels, designed and built to road-relevant specifications suited to the needs of today's drivers. The circuit is the same as the Prototype category with the exception of the UrbanConcept vehicles being required to make one stop during each lap in front of the traffic light to simulate an urban setting. 46 UrbanConcept vehicles are registered for the 2019 competition.
