The International Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory (INTEGRAL) is a space telescope that was launched into Earth orbit on 17 October 2002, on a Proton launcher from Baikonur, Kazakhstan. INTEGRAL was developed by the European Space Agency, working with NASA and the Russian space agency. It follows a highly eccentric orbit (reaching distances of 153,000 kilometres), mostly outside the Earth's radiation belts, enabling it to observe gamma ray sources (such as gamma-ray bursts) with its array of four instruments.
