Dead and dying palm trees are all that remain of the Salton Bay Yacht Club, a popular resort and lure for movie stars in the 1950s and early 60s. Dwindling inflows and rising salinity have transformed the Salton Sea from from a popular tourist resort and peaceful refuge to an increasingly dry and toxic wasteland. Fluctuating shorelines and creeping salinity have wreaked havoc at Salton City and other communities along the shore where homes and cars have been abandoned to the elements. A victim of geography, pollution, and California's ongoing and contentious water politics, the Salton Sea is likely to continue shrinking in coming years. At its current rate, the Salton Sea will be mostly dry by the year 2025.
