Caspian Sea. Satellite image of the Caspian Sea. Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Iran, Azerbaijan and Russia share its shores. The Caspian Sea is the world's largest inland sea. It has no outflowing rivers, and loses water only by evaporation. It is fed by several rivers including the Ural (top centre) and the Volga (top left). Fertilizer runoff from agricultural land has resulted in eutrophication (nutrient enrichment) of the sea's water, which in turn has led to algal growth (green swirls, top). Shallow water is blue, deep water is black. This image was obtained by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the TERRA satellite on 11 June 2003.
