The numerical strength of the police force atthe time the chiefs last annual report was made, was 406, a smaller forcerelatively than that of any other large city in the Baldwin Hotel and Theatre. The Fire Department Consists of a Board of Fire Commissioners who act without compensation,a Chief Engineer, one First Assistant Chief Engineer, one Second AssistantChief Engineer and five Assistant or District Engineers, seventeen steam fireengine companies, seven hose companies (including fire-boat 1 and five hookand ladder companies, comprising a force of 362 men of all grades and positions. The Fire Commissioners Recently appointed by the Board of Supervisors are W. B. Wilshire, C. , Jr., H. R. Mann, P. F. Dunne, and Maurice Schmitt.
