Antarctica. Satellite image of Antarctica (pink) and its surrounding sea ice (white) on 14th July 2005. The amount of sea ice around the continent changes throughout the year, with a larger area, up to 18 square kilometres, during the winter and a smaller area, around 3 million square kilometres, during the summer. The average area covered will also vary from year to year. Image obtained by the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer for EOS (AMSR-E) on NASA's Aqua satellite.
