Shin splints. Computer artwork of a lower leg showing an area of the tibia (shin bone) affected by medial tibial stress syndrome, or shin splints. This is a painful condition often caused by the stress put on bones through running, jumping, dancing etc. It can take a while to heal and any form of activity that puts stress on the lower limbs must be stopped until the pain subsides. It is mainly treated with rest and anti-inflammatory treatments such as cold packs and drugs.
