It's based on calf shelters built by Brian Kriz, a cattleman in the Rimbey area. The shelter can provide a warm dry spot out of the wind for young calves to rest and sleep. The cattle guard keeps mature cows from reaching in and eating the bedding. If straw in the shed gets wet and dirty, the shelter can be pulled to a clean site.
