Great Gonerby gibbet. On the Great North Road at Gunnerby Hill, notorious for highway robbery in the 17th century. A n attached sign reads “This gibbet is representative of the type which is believed to have stood in the vicinity of the Great North Road over Gunnerby Hill shown by a symbol on a coachmans route diagram of 1667. A gibbet was used for the display the body of a previously executed criminals body near the crime scene (notorious highway men such as Dick Turpin) in an attempt to deter others from such activities.
