It is an admitted fact that the weak point of railroad tracks isthe joint, and, although the conditions on paved street railway. arises where the tie is cut by the base of the rail, and not by the footof the angle bars. This trouble can only be avoided by the mostcareful attention and inspection. An attempt to escape this troublehas been made on some steam railroads by making thefoot of the angle bar %-in. ahove the top of the rail base, but thisonly aggravates the difficulty, as such joints have to carry a load
