Mara, Dolichotis patagonum


Maras Dolichotis patagonum are rodents of the Caviidae family and natives of the open pampas grasslands of South America and in particular central and southern Argentina They are also called Patagonian Hares and are related to the guinea pig They have hoof like claws and long legs which assist them when running swiftly up to 28 mph 45 kph often to avoid danger They are declining in numbers but are not yet threatened They can live for 14 years in captivity and can produce young from 8 months old usually in litters of 1 to 3
