St Mary Abchurch, church in the City of London, reredos
The reredos, or altarpiece, is the only authenticated piece of carving by Grinling Gibbons in all the City churches; in the vestry accounts for 1686 there is a bill in his handwriting, demanding payment for his work on the 'olter pees'. The limewood carving includes festoons of garlands of fruit and flowers including corn, hops, with grapes, apples, pears and pea pods. Pelican in her Piety in the centre. Topped by flaming urns.
