November 8, 2012, New York, NY, US. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced that gas (petrol) rationing would begin at 6am on Friday, November 9, to ease long lines at filling stations. Gas shortages continue nearly two weeks after Hurricane Sandy struck the city. Sales of gas will be restricted to cars whose license plates have even numbers on even days and odd-numbered plates on odd days. The rule will not apply to people filling gas cans. Since the storm struck only about 25% of the city's gas stations have been open at any one time. It is the first time gas rationing has been imposed in New York City since the 1970s.
