Degeneration is found not only in the columns of the cord but alsoin the posterior horns of the cord, into which many fibres, as alreadystated, pass from the posterior columns. It will be remembered thatthe posterior horn of the cord is made up of a gelatinous and spongysubstance, the substantia spongiosa, lying nearer to the periphery thanthe substantia gelatinosa. These two substances are permeated by the PLATE XVIII.
