The engraved gems and cylinders discovered in the ruinsbear ample witness to the skill of the Babylonian of these relics exist in European collections, and,during my residence at Hillah, I was able to obtain several. Babylonian Cylinder in Sienite (Size of the Original). interesting specimens from the Arabs, who usually pickthem up on the mounds after rain. The most remarkableof them is a cylinder of spotted sienite, upon which are in-cised seven figures, and a few Babylonian characters. Thefigures are cut with delicacy and spirit. Six appear to re-present foreign captives. They are led by a warrior, armedwith bow and arrows, and having on his back a quiver end-ing in a sharp point like the head of a spear. The prisonersare clothed in robes of skin or fur. One wears a flat pro-jecting cap, and two of them carry weapons in the form ofa pickaxe. The fourth figure seems to be that of a woman,and the last two are smaller in size than the others. Onebears on his shoulders a table or stool, theother a bag hanging on a hooked stick.
